Conway Buckle
How do I use the conway buckle?
I'm kind of a novice when it comes to tack....I'm still learning! I purchased a set of reins with conway buckles. How do I use this kind and how do I attach it to the bit? I feel silly they are probably simple to use but I never have used them and want to make sure I fasten it correctly...thanks
It's going to be hard to explain in words, but I'll try. Turn the buckle so it is pointed up like a fat U. Start "under" the buckle, run the end of your rein through the opening, over the tongue, and back down through the opposite opening. Leave yourself at least an inch of slack, better make it two inches. Poke a hole where the tongue is now resting, but don't stick the tongue through it. Loop the loose two inches onto your bit or snap, then run that end back into the buckle UNDER the running piece. You will need a hole sort of near the end of this piece, but no so close to the end that it is weak. Place this end-hole (remember UNDER the running end) over the tongue, and push it all the way down. Now, push that original hold down over the short end and the tongue. When you pull it all snug, the running end will hold the short end in place.
This picture shows it a little bit. What I am calling the "running end" is the long part, the actual rein. You probably have a roping rein like in the picture, but some woven split reins come with conway buckles to.
