I have some deer skins that I want to make leather out of?
Can someone tell me how to make leather out of deer skins. I have been looking online, but can't find any good articles. The deer skins are now months old and starting to smell.
P.S. I want to make them as natural as possible. Does anyone know how the native americans made leather from hides?
the same way we tan them today! we are still here you know.
you may not be able to use the hides you have if they are already starting to smell bad.
first scrape the hide and get all the fat off..dry scrape or wet scrape..your choice. then soak it in a large barrel or bucket of water..it must be totally submerged. after a day or so, scrape off the hair. repeat as often as necessary.
soak it again in clean cold water over night then stretch it out to open the pores
i'll assume you don't have the brains of the deer? if not use 4-6 eggs in a couple gallons of water. make sure its pure water...no chlorine etc. rain water is good.mix it up and heat till just warm...not hot.soak the hide in this solution overnight again.
of course you can smoke it for color..or not. if you do smoke it put it back in the solution again. work it until it softens.
there are a lot of steps and it is a bit more detailed than this but it will work. be warned..its a long messy process.
