How to clean really dirty leather?

My horse's bridle has really dark stains on the leather, but I think that its dirt and grease. The leather is a light chestnut color, but the discoloration is almost black. This is a really nice bridle, I really love it, and I want it clean. I tried using Fiebings Saddle Soap, and it helped a little to lighten the stains, but I didn't want to risk damaging the leather. I also used some product called Leather Therapy: Wash, but it didn't do much, but it did polish the bit quite nicely, it was said it could be used on just about anything.
Do I just need to use more 'elbow grease' or is there another product you can recommend for this? Like I said, its not permanently stained, but its really hard to lift.

Get separate cleaner and conditioner products. If it's really that dirty, you're more than likely going to end up with some discoloration in the end. I personally swear by Oakwood products, but a more common brand can't hurt, as long as you have a separate cleaner product. No one-step when it's this dirty.

I would use a clean toothbrush to scrub, if the original leather wasn't too sensitive. Test somewhere subtle if you have to. If it is too sensitive, stick to a rag and elbow grease.

Finally, is it ppossible this discoloration was caused by overzealous application of neatsfoot oil? That's the only thing I know of that would cause such severe discoloration besides like a decade's worth of grime. In that case, you're out of luck. It's permanently stained.
