Lizard Vinyl
What kind of house will be safe during sever weather?
Ok, I'm looking for a house soon (my first place), I want to know what kind of house is maintained during severe storms (including tornadoes). I live in Alabama and we had an epidemic of tornado a few weeks ago. What equipment do I look, I hate vinyl siding. And also should be if the slab or crawl space? And one or two levels. I feel safer in a townhouse on two levels. I do not care about price and I'm planing on getting a shelter built in the storm or outside of my house, but I still want my house to be sure I will not have to run away every time I hear noise from the sky. Btw I hate the crawl space, except it's a must have. My aunt was exploring space and had enough rodents, animals and reptiles are in his house for a zoo. I'm talking about lizards, squirrels, rabbits, even cats. And that scares me lol.
As someone who lives in Nebraska (We get many tornadoes, although I've never personally experienced one) I can tell you that there are no materials building safely. If you get a mile wide EF5 tornado, you can absolutely guarantee significant damage. But for smaller tornadoes, generally brick houses are more resistant than wooden houses. Many houses in my area have a lot of bricks and I have even seen houses where the outside is completely covered with bricks (in affluent neighborhoods). Brick is also good, because if you get 100 mph straight line winds, as we've had a few years, there is no paint damage to worry. Obviously hail will not damage the brick. Sheltered from the weather in your basement is a good idea too. The amount of levels of your house really does not matter in a tornado situation. Your home will be damaged, no matter how many levels it is. In tornado-prone areas I guess basements are standard features on the houses, but just in case, make sure that all house plans you want to include a basement. Crawl will not really matter if you're willing to take preventive measures to prevent animals from entering. Regardless of what your house is done, you should always shelter if a tornado warning is posted for your county. As I said before, no construction material is 100% guaranteed to withstand a tornado. So if you have a tornado Alert or if you hear sirens, away. In addition, if it's just assault, your house should be fine.
