Saddle cleaning.......?
I was given an old dirty western saddle 6 months ago and I spent a month or two cleaning every nook and cranny on it and then conditioning it with neatsfoot oil. Its a great saddle and I love it.
I went to my barn yesterday and my saddle is covered in green mold! So first of all what is the best way to clean a moldy saddle? Second of all, is there a sealer or anything that I can put on it to prevent it getting moldy again? I don't know what happened. None of the other saddles in the barn got moldy. The only difference is that my saddle was on the bottom of the saddle stand, pretty close to the ground.
Thanks guys. The mold is everywhere. I mean the billets, latigo, saddle strings, fenders, skirt... everywhere. Shouldn't I take the saddle strings off to clean them? Because the mold is in the crevices.
Don't worry - only tack that is supple and well oiled goes mouldy!
Just wipe it off with a damp cloth and rub some saddle soap into it.
A hint for you, if you are using Neatsfoot oil, warm it first and apply to a saddle with a paint brush, (the sort for house painting not an artist brush!) you can get the bristles into the parts really hard to reach with a sponge or cloth and warming it enables it to soak in faster.
