Checkbook Cover

Help first time with checkbook? Please, thanks!?

I just received my first checkbook. I have a few questions.

1. How do I use my checkbook cover thing? i.e the flap and duplicate stuff, etc.

2. What is the paper behind every check?

3. what is a duplicate check?

4. do I have to balance my checkbook when i have online checking?
how to i use flap so it doesnt copy over to next check when i rite hard? . also what is this carbon copy stuff? I see no ink carbon copy stuff just another sheet of paper to keep track of what i wrote
but when balancing my checking account...include atm withdrawls and stufF?

Almost have to answer in reverse order.

4.) Today there is no reason to balance your checkbook. You know what you have outstanding and you can verify anytime online. I've neither balanced my checkbook or bounced a check in years.

3 & 2.) The duplicate check is the paper behind every check.

1.) When you open the checkbook the first piece of paper is the check, the second piece of paper is the duplicate. It is chemically treated to make a copy of what is written on the top paper. It is "carbonless carbon paper".

You stick the flap behind the duplicate before you write your check, so the pressure from the pen point won't be transfered to the lower checks in the pile. This prevents the lower checks in the book from being marked.

Hope this helps.

Edit - Hot tip - I run 2 checking accounts. One is to write checks, the other is for the ATM. This keeps me from getting confused as to how much is in each account.
