Solid Ring

What would happen if there was a solid ring around the earth?
If someone were to make a solid ring around the equator of the earth about 100 feet above the ground in all areas, would it just float in the air?
Guys, please pay close attention to the solid part. The ring would be solid, like the ground which you stand upon.
Maybe for a while, depending on what it was made of, but it would probably eventually be torn apart from gravitational forces. A disconnected ring would be more stable, and might serve to shade or cool the earth
