Pig Hides
Why does my guinea pig hide when I get close to his cage?
and when I try to grab him to hold him he runs, but as soon as I have him close to me he calms down? Also every little noise or movement startles him. Why is that?
I got him a week and a half ago.
It OK, all piggies are like this. Its their instinct to do this because if you look at them, their eyes are faced upward. this keeps them from knowing if a predator will come to it.
Try walking slowly to the cage and start talking to him, making sure he knows its you. Maybe try getting a treat and after you talk to him start to pet him and give him the treat. Don't put your hand right above him when you try to pick him up. The shadow will scare him, causing him to run for shelter. Just pet him calmly and if he is in his igloo, just lie your hand down by the door. After a while the piggy will come sniff it and you can kinda pet his nose. If this doesn't seem to work, take his igloo out and do the process over again.Make sure he feels safe and secure.
the wrong thing to do is barge in and reach your hand in to pick him up. Be patient, calm and secure. Sometimes extra hard things become extra rewarding.
